The school enjoys a lively debate with Jeremy Hunt and Paul Follows

Charterhouse was delighted to welcome South West Surrey’s incumbent MP, Jeremy Hunt (Conservative) and Paul Follows (Liberal Democrats) for the School’s first hustings event.

Both candidates took time out of their busy campaign schedules to attend the hustings and present their policies to our pupils. Sadly, the Labour candidate for South West Surrey was unable to attend, but we look forward to welcoming him for future events. The event was well-attended by pupils and teachers alike who commented that it had been a highlight of their year so far.

Deputy Head Boy and A Level Politics pupil, Oba Agboola welcomed the candidates to the school to enormous cheers from the crowd. The event was chaired by A-Level Politics pupils, Gabriel Brown and Anthony Gosnell, and Year 10 pupil, Shiv Pillai. They all did a fantastic job, asking the candidates questions which had been submitted in advance by pupils and staff and then leading audience questions in response. What an incredible accomplishment!

Hard-hitting questions put to the candidates ranged from the UK’s approach to Brexit and whether trust in UK politics was irreparably eroded in light of recent events. Both candidates answered the questions in an informative, professional and dynamic way, and the audience left with many issues to reflect upon.

Charterhouse wishes the candidates the best of luck as they continue their election campaigns.

Now Fact-Checking the Tories ‘In Touch.’

Featured

Or perhaps more to the point former MP for SW Surrey Jeremy Hunt’s ‘In Touch.’ Because the latest leaflet  has very little to do with Tory achievements in ‘Your Waverley.’

Just a bit of trumpet blowing for ~Our Jeremy – or what?

But there is something very worrying going on here.

Because he knows, and we know, the police know and more important the residents of Farncombe and Godalming know who was behind the campaign against the spate of anti-social behaviour that has hit the area.

You know full well that it was the frustrated residents of Farncombe & Godalming that prompted a public meeting which was hosted by Cllr Penny Rivers and Cllr Paul Follows. They hosted a session for 220 people held in Farncombe, to which you were invited, and to which you didn’t attend. You can read all about that September meeting here. It was held at a time you were ‘spending more time with your family.’ And twittering to Boris Johnson saying you hoped he was having as much fun being PM as you were having not doing itThe fightback has begun to deal with anti-social behaviour – “and make Farncombe great again.”

Waverley  Cllr Rosoman and Cllr Paul Follows pledged to follow up on all the actions suggested by the public and subsequently, together they convened a meeting of the council, police, schools and youth groups partnership committee to deal with the serious issues and are implementing their actions.

Mr Hunt, you put out a survey which might as well have asked if people want free money. 91% support for more visible policing…of course people want that.

So come on Jeremy, be honest,  it is hardly YOUR CAMPAIGN  is it really ?- So apologise to the residents of Farncombe and Godalming – for attempting to hijack THEIR campaign as your own.  Because the public isn’t stupid and they have ways and means of ensuring you understand that.

Will Anne Milton still hold the whip hand in Guildford & villages?

Anne Milton is now – whipless, party-less, and with former Tory Waverley Councillors like these, who needs enemies?!

annemilton.jpg

Since 2005-Anne Milton has represented the people of Guildford, Cranleigh & Ewhurst as their MP.  But as the local branch memberships prepare to cast their votes tonight Thursday, it is in the knowledge that the Tory vote has been split asunder by a woman, who herself, held the Deputy Chief Whip’s position in Parliament.

Although a highly respected, hardworking, and in the most part successful MP, she may find some opposition to her decision, having made one crucial mistake in the eastern villages.

It was Ms Milton, along with SW Surrey MP Jeremy Hunt  – who together urged Secretary of State Sajid Javid, to call in the Dunsfold Aerodrome planning application. A delay, which having been approved by ‘Your Waverley’ and the S of S, then prompted a Judicial Review, by the objectors she backed.  Although also agreed by the High Court last year, it robbed Waverley of more than 500 homes, a pivotal component of its Local Plan and precipitated the loss of even more of the borough’s countryside to other eager developers.

However, she did redeem herself in part, by her efforts to turn the spotlight on flooding problems in both Alfold and in Cranleigh. She chairing regular Flood Forums, regularly taking on the Environment Agency and Thames Water and holding all the statutory agencies to account.  Sources close to Ms Milton say she has become increasingly frustrated by party politics in recent years but is eager to continue to represent the people on whose behalf she has worked tirelessly for 24 years.

So let the battle begin? All that remains is filling in the black holes?

Will Anne Milton stand in what could be – a close run for the Guildford & Villages seat in the General Election?

Guildford Conservative Association and all the branch’s of the Tory tree will be gearing up over the coming weekend to choose the candidate for the ‘once-safe’ Guildford and eastern villages seat.

While some wannabe Tory candidates are getting up close to Boris, MP Anne Milton is fighting in Parliament to ensure all those extant planning permissions for housing on her patch are built-out.

She asked Secretary of State for Housing Minister Esther McVay to “do something” to force developers to build much-needed homes, instead of surrounding sites with hoardings. She says while there is a requirement on developers to begin building within a set period from the granting of planning permission, there is no equivalent requirement to finish what they start, let alone a deadline to do so.  This leads to building land left abandoned and unused, housing completions lagging behind housing need, and leaving people without homes.

It was business as usual for one of the finest, hardworking and most respected constituency MP’s Guildford, Ewhurst and Cranleigh have ever had.  She told a Westminster Hall debate this week that:

“Local authorities simply do not possess enough tools to force the hand of [property] developers,” Ms Milton had requested the debate on Building Out Extant Planning Permissions to express her frustration that slow progress by developers meant many sites with planning permission were left undeveloped while people suffered from housing shortages”.

“We need houses that people can afford in areas such as Guildford and Cranleigh, where prices are eye-wateringly high (the average house price in Guildford is more than £550,000), and get the socially rented homes we also need.

“But it sometimes feels as if successive governments are simply unwilling to do anything that will upset the developers’ apple cart.”

Ms McVey said: “When we talk about the number of homes coming forward, we all agree there have been many decades of not building enough. Demand has outstripped supply for many years. In the past year, more than 220,000 homes have been built, more than in all but one of the past 31 years.

“We need to do more, and more is being done, but a significant amount has been done already. We are going in the right direction. The government are putting another £44 billion into home-building.

“What we are doing is bringing forward an accelerated planning Green Paper. There will be not just a single solution that ensures that developers build-out there will be an array of solutions, using both carrot and stick approaches. Those methods will be set out in our new Green Paper, which is coming

It’s the time of year for a little fact checking. Fact or Fiction?

Featured

herbertwells-front-the-invisible-man-1529161114658Have you read any good works of fiction lately?

Had any leaflets thrust through your letterboxes?

Now – we all know that Godalming’s Tory  Councillors work tirelessly for us here in the town that is home to Waverley Towers…

Don’t we?

We will completely ignore the fact that one of our Tory Godalming borough and town councillors is presently residing as a guest of Her Majesty and was forced to hand over his Town Council mayoral chain and seat to others!  Because it might be churlish to mention it? So whisper who dares.

However, we will not sit idly by and ignore the lies, damn lies and statistics being scattered like mildew seed corn through the doors of townsfolk. Leaflets, funded by Tory HQ and featured below.

“Hard work behind the scenes saving Green Oaks School?”

WW can tell you who put in the hard work. Green Oaks PTA – parents, and Godalming’s new boy on the block – Cllr Paul Follows!

Ten out of Ten to the Tories for coming up with a work of fiction so well-crafted it should qualify for its own series on Netflix featuring the silent superhero Cllr Andrew Bolton. A man rarely seen and seldom heard. A man from whom residents’ questions seldom receive an acknowledgement, let alone a reply.  He’s pictured below with Busbridge’s own Invisible Man, Cllr Peter Martin, someone so busy and multi -hatted, he’s never been seen in public! Except of course like now – at election time! Or perhaps when resigning as SCC chairman after apologising and admitting he had shown a lack of “cultural awareness and good judgement” in an interview for a member of staff.

Well, folks – together with Andrew-Bolton from the Blue – they have just shown another example of ” lack of good judgement.” Because the residents of Godalming cannot be fooled!

Tales of the unexpected as Surrey’s Mr Tickle resigns.

The disingenuous triple-hatted politician – Surrey County,  Waverley Borough and Godalming Town Council –  Peter Martin had been briefing local politicians that Green Oaks School would CLOSE. Indeed his note to Jeremy Hunt MP tipped him off that CLOSURE  would be the CERTAIN outcome of the ‘public consultation’.

MP and Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt then sent out this  ill-advised press comment:

“It is a great shame that Green Oaks CofE Primary School is set to close and I fully appreciate the concerns of parents who are understandably worried about what will happen to their children and where they will continue their education.

Surrey County Council and the diocese did not take this decision lightly but regrettably the fact remains that the number of pupils are down and in these difficult financial times, the council feels it can better use this resource at an alternative school,” he said.

“I have been assured that the Diocese of Guildford, Surrey CC, and local councillors are trying to do all they can to support the school and its community during this difficult time.”

We understand Peter Martin had tried to brief local councillors in an email seen by us saying:

“It has been agreed that in the best interest of the community involved, all public statements will not scapegoat or blame. There is no party political gain here and Peter guarantees that his party will be silent on this issue and the Lib Dems would also be silent.”

That campaign turned out well for them then!

Because the Lib Dems were anything but silent – putting their weight firmly behind Godalming parents and Green Oaks was saved from the Tory axe.

WW thinks this comment says it all!  As we have said so often in the past. TELL THE TRUTH OR SOMEONE WILL TELL IT FOR YOU.

‘Moanalot Munro gets mouthy after losing Surrey Police & Crime Commissioner job.

Featured

hustingsIt’s not unusual for Tory Tossers to sling their toys out of their prams when they don’t get their own way – but surely David Munro’s behaviour following his de-selection as Surrey’s Police & Crime Commissioner was a bit OTT? Even for him. Guess losing the plumply salaried job was a bit of a blow for the serial glory-seeking politician who is photographed more often than Meghan Markle. But,  to be pushed aside by a woman and Alfold’s Bobby – no longer on the beat. WOW!

Charlotte Alice Chorico – a qualified Criminal Solicitor beat Alfold’s  Waverley Borough Councillor Kevin Deanus to take the top nomination, by just a narrow margin – 20 votes.

Was DM about to take defeat gracefully? Not bloody likely – with a face like a slapped arse it was obvious to everyone involved he wanted to stamp his DM’s all over both of them. He believed having shoved up the council tax to employ 100 more officers for the county – saying – “I want to win again like I did in 2016” his future job was in the bag?

The arrogant Mr Munro asked the lady in waiting:

charlottechorico

“Why if the incumbent is doing such a good job, can you justify standing against him. When she replied:

Said Charlotte Alice Chorico: “It’s called democracy.”

david_munro2

At which point she was selected and DM threw down his rattle and his jellycat and stomped off without congratulating his successor.

After one questioner from SW Surrey Conservatives asked  Mr Munro what he would do about the potholes in the lovely area of Waverley? Perhaps someone should tell the dozey Cllr TT Jeanette Stennett – That roads are a county matter and nothing whatsoever to do with the Police.

Another member present said that he found the partisan behaviour displayed by sections of the audience rather distasteful. He claimed that Guildford councillors seemed to be mainly supporting Kevin Deanus while those from SW Surrey remained loyal to David Munro, who in 2016 recaptured the role of PCC for the Conservatives from an Independent. Saying afterwards: “He had won the position back and was hung out to dry.”

Guildford Conservative Association chairman Bob Hughes, who was also at the selection meeting said: “In choosing our Police Commissioner Candidate, Surrey Conservatives had three excellent people to choose from.

“Cllr Kevin Deanus is a leading figure in Guildford Conservatives and I know that many turned out to support him, but Charlie [Chorico] is clearly a rising star who will be an excellent commissioner, and I know that Guildford will support her enthusiastically.

Perhaps not all Captain Bob?

Youth Crime and hate crime is rising in Cranleigh New Town and the Eastern Villages.

PS. Does this now mean the DM will be haunting Farnham’s doorsteps in the May elections? Oh! No – not again – we thought he had given us up years ago?

Caption competition – Help the Local Tories with their leaflets?

Featured

Conservative central office kindly sends out a template for local Councillors to fill in and pretend they are ‘In Touch’ This does rely on them having something to say. Nothing stops a Tory sticking out a leaflet with their faces in it – not even basic editing.

Unfortunately, the Godalming edition was sent to the printers with the templates still incomplete!
We’d like to offer a bottle of Silent Pool Gin to the best caption writer out there – Please comment below!

So which local Tory is being beaten up over this glaring error? Perhaps Jeremy’s agent and local co-ordinator Edward Norman will consider his position or is he now too busy in Woking, Runnymede & Weybridge to spot these glaring mistakes.

Here at the Waverley Web we have one of our own:

‘Hands up if you think we can manage to get our leaflets in shape- let alone protect Godalming.’

FactCheck – Your Local Tory leaflet?

People Power or Political Power?

Never before have we seen such scrutiny applied to a piece of Conservative propaganda as this piece of fiction that was delivered in Central Godalming, and has caused quite a stir on the Godalming Community Facebook Group. Thanks, Elaine for the post!

elaine_williams

Godalming Residents, the Green Oaks PTA and parents have been steaming at the idea that Cllr Andrew Bolton is taking credit for “allowing the school to remain open for a year”, generating 98 comments of outrage in the Facebook Group. Elaine asked the Group: “I thought the Liberal Dems councillor Paul David Follows was the main campaigner of keeping Green Oaks school open? Have I got that wrong?”

Screen Shot 2018-08-17 at 21.11.41

It was well known that the Conservatives wanted to close the school, which had caused them some headache over the years, ruining the Education Cabinet member Cllr Peter Martin’s Waverley statistics. No wonder Peter took every opportunity to brief against the school, and apparently urging fellow councillors that the closure was inevitable. This briefing then led to Jeremy Hunt issuing this unfortunate press release reported in the Sorry Advertiser:
Jeramy Hunt backs Green Oak school closure decision as public meeting called. Jeremy Hunt said: “although he sympathised with parents and children, he understood Surrey County Council’s decision. It is a great shame that Green Oaks CofE Primary School is set to close and I fully appreciate the concerns of parents who are understandably worried about what will happen to their children and where they will continue their education.”

Sometimes Jeremy you need to consult the actual people rather than your Tory cronies as to the will of the people!

Godalming Town Councillor Richard Wainwright jumped in to try and defend Peter Martin and Andrew Bolton and received very short shift!

Screen Shot 2018-08-21 at 17.24.41

Richard was also noted for taking credit for the Godalming Neighbourhood Plan, something he admitted was nothing to do with him, although he did apparently amend a line in it at the consultation stage. Bravo Richard!

Screen Shot 2018-08-21 at 17.22.58

Of course Green Oak parents are also furious that the Conservatives  say the school only has a years’ reprieve!

That’s  not what the parents have been told – and is hardly likely to encourage people to send their children there with its future in limbo!

If you receive an election leaflet, from whatever party, do send it in to us at WW and we will be happy to fact check it with you!

Our post yesterday asked if some Waverley councillors had been hit by the pre-election panic stick?

This particular Godalming Councillor most certainly has!

Gets interesting when Councillor Bolton jumps in talking in the third person.. so when he does deign to engage with the community it’s not even him!

Now here’s the real man behind the campaign to save Green Oak School. Councillor Paul Follows. Election season 2019 has begun?

PAUL FOLLOWS – Godalming’s new man on the council block plays a blinder in support of the town’s schoolchildren.

Green Oaks School closure prompts emergency Town Meeting tonight.
