Due to a problem with its roof – no surprise there then – “Your Waverley’ has been forced to close Cranleigh Swimming Pool. However the remainder of the leisure centre is still open.
You can read all about the planning application for the new centre on the link below.
When council committee members were told of the temporary closure, Cllr Jane Austin, Leader of the Tory Group, pointed yet another accusatory finger at the administration. This is despite YW warning of all the problems faced by the dilapidated building for years and plans to build a new circa £40m replacement centre in Village Way.
Has anyone told new girl Austin that her party only marginally supported the council’s plans to replace the centre? Many of her colleagues opposed it, claiming it was far too expensive. That included Farnham Cllr Carole Cochburn, who said the costs were “eye watering.”
Of course, the centre’s users are frustrated by the temporary closure of the swimming area for roof repairs. However, had it not been for the herculean efforts of Cranleigh Cllr Liz Townsend and her Rainbow Administration colleagues, the centre likely would have been closed down long ago.
The logistics of building the new state-of-the art, low -carbon Passivhaus building – among the first in the country in the centre of Cranleigh is a complicated exercise.
It has always been the council’s intention to build the new centre while keeping the old one operating as Waverley was well aware of its huge usage, particularly for the swimming club.
Here’s the layout.

What happens in the meantime to all those paying by direct debit for children’s swimming lessons??? They have been Less than poor in communication.
Your post is incorrect. The Leisure Centre is NOT closed – just the Swimming Pool. The Gym and all the fitness classes are running as normal!
Thank you, Julian. We will correct our post immediately.
