Sprucing up the Farnham Museum with Lottery Funding

‘Your Waverley’ has hit the Heritage Lottery Pot.

It has been awarded a £230,310 grant to help repair the historic brickwork at Willmer House, home of The Farnham Museum.

The Museum of Farnham is a local history museum in a beautiful Georgian townhouse with many original features and a delightful walled garden. It charts Farnham’s history, from its prehistoric roots to its hop-growing boom and Georgian grandeur. Discover the tales of the illustrious William Cobbett, political agitator, and George Sturt, local author and craftsperson, whilst marvelling at the inventions of engineer John Henry Knight, who created one of the first petrol-driven cars! The Museum is also home to an extensive art and craft collection due to the many artists and craftspeople who have been drawn to Farnham over the years. The Museum of Farnham is part of the Farnham Maltings Association. The grant is in addition to the £734,335 funding already secured through Arts Council England’s Museum Estate and Development Fund called (“MEND”).

To ensure the repair programme is delivered within the MEND deadline of April 2026 and to account for the suspension of work over the winter months, the Council has been advised to begin work in the late summer of 2024.

  1. Excellent news it will end the burden of paying for expensive scaffolding, no doubt the cost of which will be made transparent! What will be the ongoing cost to the council tax payers?
