It has a been a long tough period for some in ‘Your Waverley..

It was lonely and cold!

Some residents endured a tough few weeks during and after Christmas and the holidays. Many in Cranleigh, Alfold, and the eastern villages were without water for several days.
Hitherwood was severely affected, and many other  Cranleigh areas suffered burst pipes and flooded roads and gardens. Before that, Ewhurst lost its water supply.
Alfold residents suffered sewage spills on their properties. The water and sewage infrastructure has been allowed to deteriorate over decades and has become unfit for purpose. Villager gardens were flooded with raw sewage, and toilet paper littered their lawns.

Even MP Jeremy Hunt now refers to the village as “Poor old Alfold.”  Now his bag carrier wannabe MP Cllr Jane Austin is dipping her nose into Alfold when villagers, many without broadband and telephone connections due to the big Bramley Stink, believe she has enough to concern herself with on their patch.

Mr Hunt says Alfold’s problems have been exacerbated by the failure of upgrades to the water system proposed in the Dunsfold Park 106 legal agreement.

A development that he objected to and which has now been mothballed! He said he lived in dread of that development on Waverley’s largest brownfield site ever going ahead! Is Dunsfold Garden Village Done For?

Maybe now that Aunty Angela has heard about a site that has had planning consent for years and remains undeveloped. will step in?

Alfold residents also experienced a massive shock when they learned that their Parish Council Chairman, Ed McCudden, died suddenly on Christmas Day.

Before Christmas, he and his parish council colleagues had been grappling with a host of village issues, including the spectre of yet more housing development and creaking infrastructure.

Gomshall residents were without gas after a burst water main caused water to enter the gas pipes. A day without heating or hot water in January was no fun, and the festive spirit of residents was tested.
After record dividend payouts to investors and eyewatering salaries and bonuses paid to Thames Water’s senior staff, the warning of a 59% hike in bills alongside a spike in sewage spills is shocking but predictable. The company has been bled dry and asset-stripped, leaving it in a dire state, and it expects to be bailed out by its long-suffering customers.

  1. Hm. Ms Austin doesn’t live in Bramley so as a parish councillor does she work here as the MP’s baggage handler?
